This is one of the best areas for bicycle touring in Ontario.
It is a place that time forgot; a gem of historic lakefront ports
and an easy ride on traffic free paved roads making it truly a
cyclists' paradise.
Bike close to the Lake Erie shore with many options for shorter
distances and loops. It is about the same distance - 40 kilometers –
between Port Dover, Port Rowan and Port Stanley.
The settlements which date from the early 1800's include the early
regional capital at Vittoria, Port Burwell with it's 1840 lighthouse
and the picturesque hamlets of Normandale and Port Ryerse. You can
rest on the Lake Erie beaches and camp at the Provincial Parks at
Long Point, Turkey Point or Port Burwell. Long Point is also a UN
designated natural area. The Backus Conservation area near Port Rowan
has a heritage village with an original operating 1798 water powered
mill and camping facilities.
Both Port Stanley and Port Dover have summer theater. Port Dover is a
tourist centre with restaurants featuring fresh Lake Erie perch and pickerel.
Should you happen to visit there on any Friday the thirteenth you will
find yourself a part of as unique celebration with hundreds of
recreational motorcyclists from near and far.
