You can bicycle through the most southerly part of Canada close to the
shore of the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, the Thames River and Lake Erie.
The Chrysler Canada Greenway Trail follows an abandoned rail line from the
paradise of Colisanti’s Tropical Gardens to the Colio Winery in Harrow and
the south side of Windsor. This area is very flat making for an easy ride
and perfect for for early or late season rides since it is frost free a month
longer than the rest of Ontario.er than the rest of Ontario.
Leamington makes a great centre for exploring this area and a number of
loop routes are available. From there you can bicycle 15 kilometers
to Point Pelee, 50 kilometers to Amherstburg, 70 kilometers to Windsor
or 80 kilometers to Chatham.
Enjoy scenic countryside including the French Canadian community of
Pain Court as well as the settlements of black slaves who escaped from
the United States at North Buxton. Learn about the history of this area
by visiting the restored Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, 1850
John Park homestead on the lake at Colchester and Fort Malden on the
river in historic Amherstburg.
This area is home to one of Ontario’s oldest wineries, the Pelee Island
Winery in Kingsville, as well as a growing number of new ones close to
Lake Erie. This unique natural area produces an abundance of fresh fruit
and vegetables from the fields and acres of greenhouses.
Explore the boardwalk, nature trails and beaches of Point Pelee National Park
with a tree canopied paved roads to the tip. Pelee Island makes an interesting
day trip from Leamington or Kingsville harbour. Visit the Pelee Island Winery
pavilion and bike along quiet lakefront roads.
A package route guide is available for a 5 or 6 day “Erie Shores and Pelee" ride
with a 60 kilometer average distance per day including turn by turn directions,
accommodation suggestions, restaurants and attractions. Starting from Windsor or Amherstburg,
you bike close to the shore of Lake Erie, the Thames River and Lake St. Clair
including Point Pelee National Park. The optional 6th day is a day trip
traveling by ferry to bicycle Pelee Island. Luggage transfer and accommodation
