Rideau Heritage Route
This is one of the popular areas for bicycling in Ontario with
scenic quiet roads and charming towns. Kingston is a popular historic
waterfront city with a ferry to Wolfe Island and New York State.
Bike 30 kilometers east on the Waterfront Trail to Gananoque, the
gateway to the Thousand Islands. Along the way you can take a short
ferry ride to Howe Island. Gananoque has a lively waterfront featuring
the river front Heritage Centre, island boat cruises, theatre at the
Thousand Islands Playhouse and the Festival of The Islands in August.
Enjoy the 70 kilometer scenic Thousand Islands Parkway bikeway and
Waterfront Trail between Gananoque to Brockville. Brockville's
Riverfest offers many days of concerts and entertainment starting
the last week of June but there are also lots of regular attractions
at this historic city on the St Lawrence River including the farmers
market, historic railway tunnel, Theater Brockville, the Brockville
Museum and Fulford House 1900's Edwardian mansion.
From Brockville you continue on the Waterfront Trail 50 kilometers
to Prescott with historic Fort Wellington, on the St. Lawrence River.
Follow quiet historic routes north to Kemptville leading to the
wonderful old stone buildings and Blockhouse Museum in the historic
Rideau Canal town of Merrickville. Continue along the Rideau Canal
from Kemptville to Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the nation's capital
with a great system of bike paths and an unequalled array of
attractions, museums, restaurants and accommodation.
It is 40 kilometers from Brockville to Kemptville and an additional
30 kilometers to Ottawa
A package route guide is available for a 5 day “St. Lawrence and
Rideau Canal Ride” with a 60 kilometer average distance per day
including turn-by-turn directions, accommodation suggestions,
restaurants and attractions. Starting at Gananoque, you bike east along the Thousand
Islands Parkway and then north to the Rideau Canal visiting several
canal lock towns. Luggage transfer and accommodation reservations
are available. Check out our
